Into the World

Photo #81

This is the escalator at DuPont Circle in Washington, DC. At least three times a week I go up the escalator at DuPont Circle in Washington, DC. I never go up this escalator. You see, this is the North side escalator. I go up the South side escalator. Except this day. On this day I went a different and it took me to whole different place. With escalators as with life, if you never break out of your routine, you will miss many things.

I've Got a Secret

Photo #57

Before I started secretly taking pictures of them with my phone, this lady was looking at me while whispering to her friend and giggling. It probably had nothing to do with me - maybe that was just how her head was pointed. I don't think I was doing anything to induce giggles, beyond just being my normal. They probably weren't laughing at me, right?

Grove Hawk

Photo #13
I don't love this picture, but I am glad I took it. It was a cold rainy morning and me my fellow commuters were waiting for the 7:55 Red Line train into DC. Most of them had their attention on screens and did not see this mighty hawk land on the sign across the tracks. Perhaps I am getting back in the groove, because after noticing this avian visitor, I took out my best camera, walked into the rain and shot him.

In Love on the Metro

Photo #10
I need to shoot more people. Posed portraits are not my thing, but I what I do enjoy is when I capture a moment where people are unaware they are being photographed. A long time ago I decided I was going to shoot 100 Strangers. This puts me up to 8. What I like about this couple is that I can imagine they've been together a long time, yet still seem to genuinely enjoy each other's company. We should all be so lucky. I also like that the man is still wearing his trolley tour bus sticker as a reminder of the fun day they had seeing the sites in DC. Based on the fact that they both have new looking New Balance sneakers, I also imagine they enjoy shoe shopping together. Most men wouldn't want to go shoe shopping, but not Mr. Trolley Man - he knows his time with her is nearing an end, and even a tedious thing like shopping or riding on Metro is an a opportunity he welcomes to spend more time with his wife. That is the fun thing about strangers - you can imagine whatever you want to about them.

Day 69 - I Get Up, I Get Down - 17 Feb 2011

I Get Up, I Get Down

What's cooler than a picture of one of the really long DC Metro escalators? A picture of one of the really long DC Metro escalators taken with a fisheye lens. This picture messes with my brain to the extent that I can convince myself that the escalator is going or I can convince myself the escalator is going down. Maybe there is some metaphor for life in that.
