Washing Ones

Photo #101

You may or may not recognize this as the building in which I work: 1111 19th Street in Washington DC. Before I worked regularly in the city, I did not realize how often window washers wash windows. It is a regular thing. Whenever I see them out there, I always think it would be a fun and exciting job. I wonder what they think when they look in and see me sitting at my desk.

What Might Be Right For You

Photo #96

I like to think that living in each of these DC townhouses lives someone whose personality matches the exterior of their house. The corpulent man from 2139 has a heavy disposition and often smokes a cigar as he sits in his over upholstered brown leather club chair reading the Wall Street Journal. His next door neighbor is a slight artist who smells of lavender and a makes tasty ceviche the with fish she brings back on her bike from the farmer's market. The twist of fate that caused them to share a wall makes for many hilarious encounters.

M Street, Remember Me

Photo #72

Do you remember this building. We've seen here on Roth365 at least twice before. It is that same building at 1900 M Street from which the security guard emerged telling me I was not allowed to take pictures. I don't know if that is the reason I keep coming back to it, or if it is because it is cool and reflecty. Probably some of both. It will probably also be the next picture.

Dish For You

Photo 71

In a drastic switch from the last picture which was looking below a building, this one is looking above one. Drastic might be too strong a word given that these are both pictures of buildings in DC, the buildings are in sight of each other, and the pictures were taken only a few minutes apart. I really just trying to make yet another building in DC picture seem like not part of the rut I seem to be falling into. I call it a rut because I know there will be many building pictures coming your way in the next few weeks.

The title of this photo is a play off of a song title by Bruce & Eugene, so hat tip to them.

Ten Years Hence

Photo #69

I like numbers. I was going to do a thing where I take pictures of my age (44), or my favorite number (17) or the number of the photo I am on. This picture is none of those things. It was a cool way to show the street address of whatever building that was.

Over Wrought

Photo #68

There are many unnecessary things done in this world. Take this railing - whoever created it could have done a much simpler version that would be just as functional and much more pragmatic. Instead, they did this. Why? Was in case someday, somebody like me was walking by looking for interesting things to photograph? Probably not. But, thanks anyway.

Life Was Such a Simple Game

Photo #31
One last shot from a fruitful Friday. For this one I ignored the rule about keeping the camera level and also gave it some extra attention in Lightroom. I'm pleased with how it came out. In fact, this might be may favorite so far. It is definitely in the top three.

Twin Peaks

Photo #30
Under the mid-day sun I went in search for pictures and food. Lunch time is a good time to get lunch, but that mid-day sun from the last sentence means it is not a good time to take pictures. Luckily there were also mid-day clouds, and that made this shot possible since I had to point the camera towards the sky. Aside: As it turns out, pointing your camera to the sky up the side of just another building will get you some strange looks. If you are trying to avoid getting strange looks, I suggest you find some other kind of odyssey.

1900 M Street

Photo #29
I had one more stop on my morning mini-photowalk before I needed to get to work. It was a building on the corner of 19th and M Street in Washington DC that I walked past every day. I positioned myself on the sidewalk in front of the building and took this one shot before a security guard came out of the building to confront me. The conversation went something like this:

Her: "Hey! Hey! You can't take pictures of this building!"
Me: "Yes I can"
Her: "No you can't"
Me: "Sure I can. I'm standing on public property. I can take pictures of whatever I want."
Her: "You have to stop!"
Me: "Why?"
Her: "You can't take pictures of this building!"

The conversation went on like that for a couple minutes before I decided it wasn't worth any more of my time. Unfortunately it is a common thing for security guards and even police to be ignorant of the law. Ignorance is a stubborn problem to solve. Perhaps the next time any of you are in NW DC with your camera, you should visit 1900 M Street and give the guard another lesson.

The Cranes Above Us Soarin

Photo #28
Continuing my morning photowalk, I headed over to a building that is under construction. The thing about new buildings that I like is that someone, somewhere had a idea that there should be a new building there, and now that idea is becoming reality. Can we build it? Yes we can!

Build Strong

Photo #25
Thank goodness for whoever came up with the idea of a cameraphone. I wasn't out to take pictures - I was just looking for some lunch. Then the lines of this building struck me as interesting and since I always have at least one camera with me, capturing it was almost too easy. A bit of graduate filter lovin in Lightroom, and this was ready to become Photo 25. Also, it sort of looks like a giant robot if you squint your eyes just so.

1111 19th St

Photo #15
I took this picture for this week's photo challenge, which is Numbers: 1-9. I felt bad about it since 1111 is not actually in the range of 1-9. So, today I took a shot that actually meets the criteria, and you'll see that later. Meanwhile, I have this somewhat interesting shot of a building in DC, which just happens to be the building in which I work. On the 11th floor, actually.

Keystone State

Photo #1
Schwab Auditorium is an historic building, and not because it was built in 1902. I'd walked by in countless times during my years at Penn State, but it wasn't until I returned this year that I really saw it. Since the point of this project is to notice things you would otherwise walk right past, I though this was a good inaugural shot for the third wave of Roth365.

Atlas and Friends

The problem with posting pictures 2+ years after you took them, is sometime you forget some small details. Things like "what is this thing and where exactly is it." I thought it was on top of a museum in Trafalgar Square, but Google has not allowed me to confirm this. I can't deny it either. Maybe I should go back to London to find out. That is, if it does not get destroyed by aliens on Christmas. Again.

Day 119 - Alley of Brew - 9 Apr 2011

Alley of Brew

In the nearby town that I call Fred City there sits a wonderful old building that makes some tasty brick oven pizza - the best pizza in town, and brews some brilliant brews.

On this fine day, while running errands that included eating the second best pizza in town, we walked past Brewer's Alley. I did not want it to be jealous that I was cheating on it with another pizza place, so I stopped to say hello and take a picture.

Skyline

Skyline

One good way to look like a tourist when visiting the big city is to point your face to the sky and marvel at how them tall buildings is bigger than anything you have back on the farm. If you happen to have a camera between your face and said buildings, you can get shots like this one.
