Laser Dome

Photo #64

Capturing light is mostly what photography is about. Prisms on the other hand disperser and refract light. This is why there is the age old question of what would happen if you took a picture of a prism? Philosophers have been debating this for centuries. I decided to give it a try and find out

With the Grain

Photo #63

This is one of those photos that looked much better in my imagination. Wood grain can be such a beautiful thing on something crafter like a table or a guitar. I'd hoped that on actual log it would interesting, too. What I got was this. Well, this and some nice flames, a satisfying crackling, the sweet smell of woodsmoke and some comforting heat. Yes, shortly after this picture was taken, I let the flame out of this log.

E Bridge

Photo #59

I've said it before and I'll say it again: the most artistic thing I will ever do with a guitar is to take a picture of it. This time it was me trying to be clever with the photohallenge.org challenge of bridges. It was Saturday, I needed another picture for the week, and the bridge of my D-16 was super convenient.

Out There In It

Photo #53

In previous odysseys, I felt like I was overly reliant on toys as subjects. In order to lessen this reliance, I opposed a 50 photo no-toy rule on myself. Welcome to photo #53. With snow blanketing this part of the world, a nice wintry landscape shot might be expected. Nope. Instead you get Han Solo out looking for his friend Luke out on the frozen planet of my deck.

I Won't be Foiled

Photo #39
Even in a 365x7, the goal is still to try to take a good picture every single day. This week is almost the total antithesis of this. This odd picture of a man made of foil (hat tip to Ella) was taken on Day 1 of the week. The next 6 pictures are all from Day 7. What happened on Days 2-6? I don't know since it seems I wasn't noticing. Or maybe I just don't remember. Either way, that is not what this odyssey is about.

Beyond the Wall

Photo #26
This week's photochallenge was about man made objects in nature. Usually I try to shoot one or the other, so this was a fun challenge. One Thursday morning as I was getting ready for work I noticed how the early morning sunlight was hitting the non-fuctional wall in our backyard. I thought it would be worthwhile to get a shot of it, but my four-legged friend decided that I was in the backyard to be barked at or played with. Little did I know this was not the last time this week that I was going to be harassed about taking a picture from somewhere I had every right to be.

The Modren Man

Photo #24
The end of the third full week brings us our first robot. I am under a self-imposed 50 moratorium on statues, Legos and other toys, and this comes darn close to breaking that. Technically this is not a toy - it a trackable geocaching travel bug. Actually, it is the thing that came with a trackable geocaching travel bug. The actual travel bug is 6000 miles into its journey, and is currently in PA. Anyway, what this picture represents is me getting to the end of the week and not having 7 odyssey-worthy pictures. It was all too easy to fall back into the old habit of taking a macro shot of something sitting around my office.

Bad Idea

Photo #17
This shot took me 4 tries. The first try was right after I took the guitar pictures, and since I had everything setup, it was easy to swap out the guitar for the lamp. The problem was the daylight through the windows reflected off the bulb in a way that I did not like. The second and third tries were after sunset, but had issues with focus, exposure, and fingerprints on the bulb - all of which were my fault. After the third try I cleaned the bulb. For the fourth try, I adjusted the exposure in the camera before taking the shot, to get it so you could just see the glass outline of the bulb. This wound up being much more effective than trying to fix it later in Lightroom. I feel like this experience caused me to level up.

Flake

Photo #8
We are still in the part of the year where I don't mind snow too much. This particular snowflake only flies when you light a candle under it or when you want to take a picture of it. Life is a moving target.

Daily Tines

Photo #7
If you followed along during either of the first two jaunts at this, you'll see that taking macros of stuff in the kitchen is something I do. I always considered it a fallback on days when I did not have a good idea. So here we are, a mere seven days in, and I'm taking a picture of a old stupid fork. This time I had a good reason though. Some of my photo buddies from way back in the Zooomr days have a website called PhotoChallenge.org on which they give a weekly challenge. This week was MACRO: KITCHEN. And there you have it.

For Cats

Photo #6
My dad does not like cats in general. As far as I know, he does not like our cat Mitten in specific. I'm not saying he dislikes cats - he is just generally indifferent to them. That being the case, I can't understand why he sent Mitten her very own free standing cat brush wicket thing. Whatever the reason, Mr. Mittens really enjoys it. Is is like catnip to her. It now sits in a predominant position in our foyer, right outside my office. That is why when I saw the afternoon sun lighting it up in an interesting way, I did what anyone on a 365 odyssey would do - I grabbed my camera. Thanks, Dad.

Eye of the Dragonfly

Photo #5
When I did my second photo odyssey, I would sometimes use the first Roth365 as inspiration by trying to take a different look at the same subject. Turns out I am doing that again, just without knowing it. I had completely forgotton about this picture of the same snow covered insect made out of a spoon. For what it is worth, I like the new one better.

Where He Needs To Be

Where He Needs To Be After a several month forced sabbatical, I am back to work. It was an interesting time. I did not feel I like I gained 10+ hours a day nor did I become awesome at guitar or even get back into photography. Don't take this to mean I did not enjoy my time off, but I am very glad to gainfully employed again. Though my new job involves neither hammers nor strawberries (at least not yet), I feel like I am where I need to be.

A Spider Can

Day 322

aSpiderCan

By most viewed shot is of a small statue of Captain America. I don't know what it is about that shot that makes it so popular, but I was hoping to repeat the success with this shot of a small Spider-Man statue. Must be the old Parker luck, but so far I have not been successful.

Lizard Leaf

Day 48

lizardLeaf

It's a new week, and I am no longer feeling the Blues. Though the day is gray and wintry, and more of the same expected (I'm looking at you, Groundhog), I going green this week. This shot is the leaf of a rose, which by any other name, would still look reptilian.

Accidental

20 January 2008

accidental

This saxophone was very old when I bought it at a yard sale in 1988. What this picture fails to capture is the smell.

Opener

3 January 2008

opener

This is a can-opener that I accidentally brought home with me from a friend's house. I took the shot as part of a Zooomr photo assignment.
